Chapter Five

Phoenix found Lorrie waiting in the den with five shifters. The werewolves were beginning to pace a little. Impatient beasts.

“I’m sorry to keep you waiting.”

“No problem. It wasn’t that long, but the new moon is riding us hard.” The alpha bowed slightly, acknowledging Phoenix’s position as leader of the vampires, but not above the alpha. The alpha’s gaze kept darting around the room as if searching for hidden dangers.

“As you probably know, I’m Phoenix Moorhaven.” He didn’t make the mistake of offering his hand to shake. Shifters never shook hands with non-shifters except for amorous purposes. He examined the alpha’s companions with interest.

“I’m Alpha Linson. I’m the one who put in the request for hunting lands. These are some of my pack members, Max, Boothe, George, and Faulk.”

“Nice to meet you.”

“George is the one who went out with Declan,” Lorrie offered helpfully as he came to stand beside him. His wide grin had Phoenix clenching his fists.

“I didn’t know he was yours.” George raised his hands in a gesture of denial.

The glare Linson sent George should’ve fried him on the spot. A frisson of unease shivered down Phoenix’s spine. The alpha sent off all kinds of bad vibes, but Phoenix couldn’t think of a single reason to deny the shifter’s request to rent out land, especially with the generous amount offered. Maybe too generous.

“Why is it you don’t have lands of your own?” Phoenix probed, trying to get a better feel for Linson. He couldn’t pinpoint what about the alpha bothered him. Most packs had land they inherited from their forefathers and was passed down from alpha to alpha.

Linson shrugged. “My pack had too many alphas. Our hereditary pack lands went to my older brother. I started my own pack, but we don’t have any space of our own. We’re city wolves, but we still enjoy a good run from time to time.” The alpha sniffed. “I can smell a house elf. Your house must be blessed. I haven’t encountered an elf in years. May I ask how you got one?”

“He came for an interview, and I hired him.” His mind wandered to Declan. What was his pretty half-elf doing now that Phoenix had left him to his own devices? Had he banished all the dust bunnies to the netherworld and destroyed the evil invasion of cobwebs timidly lurking about his basement? Any wisp of filth was instantly annihilated beneath the harsh attention of his butler.

“I hear they are difficult to lure away, maybe you can put in a good word for us?” The alpha continued. “We need one in our pack house. With so many of us, we are having difficulty keeping it clean.”

“I’ll ask Declan and see if he has any recommendations.” He wouldn’t make any promises that might put Declan in a difficult position. He’d lucked out in getting his own elf. “Now for our agreement.”

Lorrie handed him the contract Linson had already signed. Phoenix looked it over to make sure the alpha didn’t add or cross out anything.
